How to Reach Personal Goals – It Requires Change

How to Reach Personal Goals

Determining how we’re going to get the results we want almost always requires that we change something.

You know the saying, same methods, same results. If you don’t step forward, you will always be in the same place.

That stands true for most everything we do. Whether we are looking to make changes in our personal life or health (like me needing to lower my cholesterol) or to increasing our income; or maybe we’ve got our eye on making a broader difference taking a stand for social justice in our community.

Achieving goals requires personal change

It’s hard to achieve results if we don’t make at least a few adjustments to how we operate. And frequently, it’s the uncomfortable difficult changes that have the biggest impact.

People generally fear change. We like the cozy, safe feel of our routine ways. It’s scary to step out of how we’ve always done things, how we’re used to living, how we’ve always thought.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” – Anne Frank

If we genuinely want to achieve our personal goals, or radically change our lives or the lives of others we care about, then we’ve got to buck up and move past the fear.

Let’s get real about reaching results

We have to start by taking an honest look at ourselves and our ways. It’s only with authenticity and truth that we can pinpoint where our routine ways are not helping us make the impact we want, the growth we desire.

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” – Robin Sharma

Adjusting and shifting to different ways of doing and thinking, ways that align with the path we want to be on and which land on the target goal we’ve set in our heads and hearts, is the only way to get where we want to go.

Making changes to reach our goals is easier said than done

Not only might you find resistance and challenges from those around you who expect you to think and act in the same routine ways you always have… but you may also find you come up against uncomfortable friction from YOURSELF.

“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.” – Rumi

Change can be hard. It’s like wearing a new pair of shoes. At first, it feels different. It might even feel tight or noticeably awkward.

That’s normal and that’s ok. Like the new shoes, given some time, changes begin to wear in and become your new cozy. New changes end up being your routine ways.

New habits, new thoughts, new actions will wear in to where they come to feel natural and effortless.

It’s like sanding wood. At first, it’s rough and hard to sand. It takes a lot of effort and exertion to get it smooth. But after a while, the wood smooths out and there is less resistance. And eventually, you don’t need to rub anymore. It’s just smooth.

Whether you’re trying to make small, but intentional, changes to your routine, like eating more veggies, or you’re going big and changing careers, starting a new business, or doing your part to stand for social justice – it starts with being willing to push yourself past the fear of change.

Think about it – the greatest achievements of mankind have come from someone pushing past fear, doubt and judgment, and testing change.

“It had long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.” – Leonardo da Vinci

Give yourself the gift of change

Have the courage to buckle up and bust out of your routine. There is so much you can do for yourself and for others on the other side of fear.

“Every success story is a tale of constant adaption, revision and change.” – Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Records

If you have dreams (who doesn’t?!) that you don’t feel you’re getting any closer to, then it’s time to shake things up, take an honest assessment of what thoughts and ways are no longer serving you, and start bustin’ out some change!

Did I radically lower my cholesterol over only three months of change to my habits? YES, I DID!

Now onward to bigger and more important change and to achieving even more impactful personal goals!

It’s never too late! Cheers to change! – Marlene
