How Love Gives Us Courage

Heart for love gives us courage cheers 2 chapter 2 page

Love is magical. Who would argue that? But it’s so much more than magic – love is often the source of our courage.

There are many sides to the powerful emotion we call love. There’s a side of love that makes our heart flutter with excitement and passion. There’s another side of love that keeps us steadfastly caring for our family, our friends, our neighbors, our community, our globe.

And then there is the side of love I write to you about today that carries us through times so painful, so brutal, that we can barely breathe. It’s this side of love that supports us through the worst of times.

Love gives us courage to do things we never thought we’d be strong enough to do.

Love gives us the courage to move through the pain of divorce because we love our children or ourselves enough to bravely face disconnecting from the love story we were holding onto.

Love provides us the fortitude to care for a dying loved one in ways we never thought we’d have the strength for; It gives us the courage to find comforting words for a friend who has had a cancer diagnosis.

“An act of courage is always an act of love.” – Paulo Coelho

It’s love that gives us the fearlessness to speak up on behalf of people we care for, even when it’s uncomfortable to do so. It gives us the nerve to show up for the people, the country, the world we love. Love helps us show up in the most painful and difficult moments, when we would much rather hide or run away.

It’s where we find the heart to say goodbye to an elderly pet in pain before our hearts would like to let go. It gives parents courage and tenacity when they must carry on raising children alone.

“Love… a condition so strong that it may be that which holds the starts in their heavenly positions and that which causes the blood to flow orderly in our veins.” – Maya Angelou

Love supports us when we attend to a parent’s needs as they grow old and more dependent. It gives us backbone and resolution when when we would otherwise shrink away in fear or avoidance.

What guides us bravely back to peace, acceptance and hope on days we feel that we will be stuck in agony forever – is also the power of love.

If we live long enough, we will each have faced a situation at one point or another that we would have considered unimaginable, unacceptable, unsurmountable. Once in a long while, those frightening thoughts we have that keep us awake at night, come to be. And when they do, we are faced with our biggest fears playing out. What heals and restores us in the days that follow such pain, is the redeeming, healing power of love.

Love forces us to show up.

To show up for others in their time of need. To show up and love ourselves, when nothing less forceful can pull us from the darkness.

The more I think about those hard moments that we all inevitably face, including my own recent loss, the more I realize that when we choose to show up – it’s never out of obligation… it always comes from the same deep, replenishing, compelling, profound source – love.

Love is such a powerful force, so strong and so indestructible that it nearly gives us superpowers.

Love holds us upright when we would otherwise collapse. Love keeps us together when without it we would fall apart.

Yes, we can do hard things. And love is at the base, at the core, and the very foundation of our courage to do those things.

“Eventually, you will come to understand that love heals everything, and love is all there is.” – Gary Zukav

Love braces us, fuels us, carries us, and envelops us when we need courage most. It’s also love that eventually heals us and tenderly softens our scars.

Keep faith, my friends, love is the bridge over troubled waters.

Keep your heart space open and allow the magic of love to flow in and out of your heart center. It will keep you rooted, grounded and continually healing. It will keep you strong, brave and courageous. It will carry you through whatever challenges your days may bring.

Sending you so much love and light on this day. May love always be what anchors you and helps you find your way. – Marlene
