Midlife: A Stop on the Path to More

midlife finding more purpose

It’s called midlife because there is a second half of life to live.

In years, our second half may not end up being equal to our first, but in terms of personal growth and satisfaction, it can be.

In fact, it can be more.

It’s up to us to make that happen.

Our second half of life might include pursuing new (or old) dreams, interests, passions or perhaps even newfound purpose helping others. No one can give us a map for our journey, it’s our path and it’s unique to us.

Wake up! It’s time to get our heads out of this midlife fog and get going!

Easy to say, I know. Some days, my entire purpose feels like it’s only to keep my sh*t together and not kill somebody, never mind considering how I might cheerfully rock the second half of my life.

But that’s ok.

We don’t have to have it all figured out.

No doubt, there are or will be, moments (weeks, months) in our second “half” that are sad and depressing and maybe even scary. Depending on what we, or our family and friends are going through -– we can certainly get sidetracked from our pursuit of joy and personal growth.

But even with its challenges, midlife is still the time to wake up, and maybe even shake up.

It’s time to consider what’s working for us or not, where and how we want to be and focus our energy, and even what (and sometimes who) we need to let fall away.

We aren’t kids anymore, but we‘re still allowed to dream!

And despite what dreams haven’t panned out thus far, or what negativity we’ve allowed into our heads, we still have the power to make things happen.

Regardless of how busy we are – working, schlepping kids to sports, caring for elderly parents, or picking up dog poop in the yard – we need to start thinking about, and taking actions toward, our second half.

Where and how do we want to be living – what will we do when we eventually have more free time? (I’ve heard that really will happen!) What do we want our life to look like?

How can we plan and execute steps NOW to inch closer to making all of that happen?

One day at a time, one step at a time, that’s how.

One journal, one night class, one self-help book, one walk, one decision – at a time. Whatever gets us closer and moves us forward.

What’s critical is that we need to make the effort.

It’s up to us to cut through the fog and find the path to what we are dreaming of. We’ve got to be in it to win it, right?!

“Everyone’s journey is unique, but we’re all trying to get to the same place – the place where we feel happiest, the most alive, and the most ourselves.” – Jen Sincero, Author, You are a Badass

Cheers to midlife – it’s just a stop on the way to each of us finding our more in the second half!

– Marlene
